Thunderstruck! Well, Lightning-struck Actually!

An ICU nurse at Boston Childrenโ€™s Hospital revived a woman struck by lightning on Saturday at a beach near the nurseโ€™s home. Tracy Cronin, RN, had been sitting at the front of her house Saturday before a storm rolled in, and she suddenly heard a massive bang. Outside, she saw a woman lying on the beach. As neighbors carried her up, Cronin immediately began CPR and eventually got her pulse to return, though the womanโ€™s condition remains unclear.ย

I Feel My Temperature Rising

Although 98.6ยบ F is considered the standard โ€œnormalโ€ temperature, an individualโ€™s typical temperature varies by time of day, age, sex, height, and weight. A new study in JAMA Internal Medicine analyzed over 618,000 oral temperature readings at an outpatient clinic to find that normal temperatures ranged from 97.3ยบ to 98.2ยบ, averaging at 97.9ยบ, after excluding people with infectious diseases or type 2 diabetes. See this tool to discover your personalized temperature range.

Death by Dog Bite

Deaths from being bitten or struck by a dog โ€” including dying from a fall after being knocked over โ€” arenโ€™t exactly common. They averaged about 43 deaths a year from 2011 to 2021, according to the CDCโ€™s recent Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMRW). Yet from 2018 to 2021, deaths more than doubled for men (increasing from 15 to 37 a year) and women (from 20 to 44). The MMWR report doesnโ€™t offer any possible reasons why. The American Veterinary Medical Association has prevention tips.ย

A New Algorithmย

GE HealthCare and Mass General Brigham developed an AI algorithm to predict missed appointments and late patient arrivals. In preliminary tests, it correctly predicted missed care opportunities up to 96% of the time. While the technology could increase efficiency and productivity, an editorial on bias in medical AI raises concerns. The authors note AI systems can perpetuate inequities if they provide less accurate predictions for disadvantaged groups. Discrimination can be introduced throughout model development and use. The editorial emphasizes bias detection and mitigation strategies across the AI pipeline, from data collection to real-world monitoring. Regulatory initiatives like the FDAโ€™s AI action plan will be key. As exciting as the GE and Mass General technology is, safeguards must be in place to ensure it works equitably across diverse patient populations. Failing to address bias risks worsening disparities in care.
