Nonprofit Health System Allina Reverses Controversial Policy on Medical Debt

A recent New York TimesΒ investigation revealed that Allina Health System, which runs more than 100 hospitals and clinics in Minnesota and Wisconsin, sometimes rejects patients with significant medical debt. The hospitals treat anyone in the ER but may cut off other services until debt is paid β this includes patients with
chronic illnesses like diabetes and depression and children. The policies have alarmed healthcare providers who can sometimes no longer see patients with the most needs. Allina has paused this policy following NYTβs publication.

Is Sex a Better Sleep Aid Than Meds?

A small study has found that some people find sex before bedtime to be as effective as taking a sleeping pill for getting a good nightβs sleep. Of the study's 53 people surveyed on social media, 75% reported better sleep through sex or orgasm. But the survey β which study authors say is βnot all that scientific,β according to MedPage Today β made no distinction between having sex and having an orgasm with or without a partner.

Nonprofit Hospital Wages Dip But Remain High

The average hourly wage growth at nonprofit hospitals has dipped since last year but remains aboveΒ pre-pandemic levels, a Fitch Ratings report found. It was at 5.1% year over year in April, compared with June 2022βs high of 8.4%. And hospital healthcare service payrolls have climbed for 16 consecutive months, while ambulatory services
climbed for 28 consecutive months. Nonprofit hospitals continue to add payroll positions and save costs elsewhere, such as transitioning external contract labor to permanent staff positions.
