Worms on the Brain

After more than a month of doctor visits and unexplained illnesses β€” including abdominal pain, diarrhea, dry cough, night sweats, recurrent fever, forgetfulness, and worsening depression β€” a 64-year-old woman living in Australia learned she had a live, three-inch worm living in her brain. Ophidascaris robertsi larvae are usually found in small marsupials and mammals that are eaten by carpet pythons, where the roundworm completes its life cycle. This is the first time it’s been found in humans, and the woman likely inadvertently consumed O. robertsi eggs from vegetation that she collected from a nearby lake for cooking.Β

Biomedical Research on the ISS

Astronauts from NASA, the European Space Agency, the Russian Space Agency, and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency are spending the next six months conducting biomedical research. They are performing more than 200 experiments that leverage microgravity at the International Space Station. These include studying how microchips mounted on cancer cells can be used for personalized medicine, how microgravity and cosmic radiation can alter melanin for use in biomaterials, and how respiratory mucus can be used to deliver drugs.

What a Fail, CMS

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services launched a study last year to determine the ideal minimum staffing level for the nation’s approximately 15,000 nursing homes. The results are in and they’re a huge disappointment to advocates. As expected, it showed higher staffing levels mean faster care, fewer hospitalizations and emergency room visits, and fewer failures to provide care. But the study found no single staffing level that would guarantee quality care, gratifying the nursing home industry, which opposes uniform nurse-to-patient ratios.

FINANCE FRIDAYΒ WITH NETWORTH NURSE

Nursing Investment Foundations

When I first heard finance lingo like brokerage, accounts, funds, and stocks, it was overwhelming. It’s a different language! It is similar to when our family and friends hear us say stuff like bolus, troponin, atelectasis, and their eyes glaze over.

Luckily, you don’t have to spend years understanding investments like you do with nursing. Some step-by-step guides, modules, and planning can set you up for long-term success!Β

A brokerage is simply a company that offers investment accounts. Investment accounts include 401K, Roth IRA, and more. Inside those accounts are index funds, ETFs, and mutual funds (we’ll cover the difference of those in another post). And finally, those funds are made up of different stocks and bonds.Β
