Good Morning, Readers! |
As COO of The Nursing Beat, I had the privilege of attending the ViVE conference this year as an official media partner! It was exciting to see the launch of Nurses @ ViVE, which recognized the crucial role we play in the development of healthcare technology. This shift is a positive development for the entire industry, and I encourage you to
consider attending future ViVE conferences and actively shaping the future of healthtech.

Meningococcal Disease Alarm |
The CDC has issued an alert about bacterial infections linked to a strain of meningococcal disease spreading in the US. This variant of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup Y is affecting
adults aged 30 to 60, particularly those in high-risk groups such as Black individuals and those with HIV. Virginia is experiencing an outbreak with 35 confirmed cases and six deaths since June 2022. In recent years, 2023 saw the highest number of serogroup Y infections, with 422 cases.

Diversified Nursing Workforce |
Recent federal data shows a more diverse nursing workforce in the US, yet underrepresentation persists, particularly among Black and Hispanic nurses. While Black RNs have increased to 11%, challenges remain, with Hispanic representation declining to 10% in 2022. Diverse teams can address health disparities, but racism and burnout threaten progress, with 63% of nurses reporting workplace racism.

Strike Scratched |
The New York State Nurses Association has canceled a planned strike at Staten Island University Hospital after reaching a tentative agreement on a new labor contract with management. The agreement includes enhancements to safe staffing standards and enforcement, along with a 22.12% wage increase over three years, including annual pay
increases, market adjustment pay, and experience pay. Before the tentative deal, 26 major labor unions signed a joint solidarity letter supporting the Northwell nurses.

In 2021, about four out of five nonprofit hospitals operated in a βfair share deficitβ β they spent less on financial assistance and community investment than the estimated value of their tax breaks (that is, they gave back less than they received).

Forced Gratitude |
Do you ever say βwell it could be worseβ or βI should be grateful for what I haveβ meanwhile youβre in a crazy toxic work environment and feeling horrible?🙋🏻ββοΈ
Here's the deal. There is a ton of science behind the importance of gratitude practice, but forcing gratitude is inauthentic. Gratitude with a side of guilt β happiness. This forced gratitude keeps us feeling stuck. It keeps us in toxic workplaces or burnout prone situations WAY longer than we need to be.
You don't need to be grateful for things that aren't good for you. You can feel gratitude for what you have & want more for yourself.
Action item: Tune into what you are saying to yourself & where this is showing up for you. How are these thoughts keeping you stuck?Β
How can you use gratitude as a catalyst for positive change rather than a justification for staying stuck?
