HUDDLE

Good Morning, Readers!

My name is Raquél, and I’m incredibly excited to be stepping into the role of Chief Operating Officer! My career began as a staff nurse in various specialties, including med-surg, women’s oncology, and NICU. In 2022, I switched gears and joined STAND+ (formerly Gales) as Chief Nursing Officer & Director of Communications (where I collaborated with Tamara and Hannah!).

Now, as The Nursing Beat’s COO, I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue to grow TNB and connect with all of you. Thank you, Hannah & Tamara, for your leadership, guidance, and faith in me!

3 Fun Facts About Me:

  1. I attended the 2024 Emmys.

  2. My favorite season is spring.

  3. I’ve visited 25 states.

Hawaiʻi Health System to Eliminate 100 Positions

The Queen’s Health Systems is eliminating about 100 positions to “maintain sustainable operations” amid evolving healthcare needs and technological advancements. While the organization didn’t specify the roles affected, the Hawaii Nurses’ Association reported that most impacted employees are nonunion, with seven union nurses laid off in the pre-surgery center. It criticized Queen’s move as prioritizing financial concerns over dedicated healthcare workers. The decision follows a narrowly averted nurses’ strike and a recently ratified contract that improved wages and staffing ratios.

Are Sleep Aids Hurting Your Brain?

About 8.4 percent of American adults report taking medicine to help them sleep. Some studies suggest prescription and over-the-counter sleep aids—including benzodiazepines, Z-drugs, and anticholinergics—may increase the risk of cognitive decline, affecting brain chemistry and memory, though research has not shown causation. Experts advise limiting sleep aid use and exploring alternatives like cognitive behavioral therapy or lifestyle changes to deal with chronic poor sleep, which is a risk factor for dementia.

US Health Centers Struggle Under New Policies

Some US health centers are under strain due to President Trump’s executive orders blocking federal funds. Some clinics, especially in Virginia and West Virginia, have been forced to close or lay off staff. HIV prevention programs in California and Virginia lost grants due to policies restricting diversity and gender inclusion. Some clinics are tapping into reserve funds, while others are seeking private funding. The funding freeze has created a cloud of uncertainty, leaving healthcare providers struggling to maintain essential services.

Boost Your Confidence With One Simple Word

Silence your imposter syndrome with these mind-blowing reframes 🤯 and experience the game-changing "power of yet."

  • Reframe Self-Doubt: Instead of, “I’m not good enough,” try, “I’m not there yet, but I’m getting closer.” This shift celebrates progress and reminds you that you’re evolving—you're not limited by where you are now.

  • Grace Over Perfection: You don’t need to be perfect to succeed. "Yet" gives you permission to grow at your own pace, without the pressure of perfection.

  • Turn Criticism into Curiosity: When you face a challenge or make mistakes, replace self-criticism with curiosity. Try, “What can I learn from this?” You may not have all the answers yet, but you're working toward your goals.

  • Let Go of Comparison: Focus on your own journey, not someone else’s. “I’m not where I want to be yet” is a reminder that everyone’s path unfolds in its own time.

“Yet” is more than a mindset—it’s trusting the process and yourself. You’re not where you want to be YET, but you’re making progress!
