HUDDLE

Good Morning, Readers!

On Tuesday, I asked you to share your stories of being a second-degree nurse. It was amazing to see so many of you in my inbox, telling me your unique path to becoming a nurse. Whether it was for your family or because your previous career path left you unfulfilled, I loved reading your stories.

Curious what some TNB subscribers did before becoming nurses? Here are some of the responses I got:

  • Military

  • EMT/Paramedic

  • Firefighter

  • Business Administration

  • Communications

Americans’ Reactions to CEO’s Murder

The man suspected of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Luigi Mangione, was officially charged with murder late on Monday. But the unsettling reverberations of his act continue rippling through the country, prompting discussions about the current state of the U.S. healthcare system. Social media reactions to Thompson’s death have revealed the intensity of many Americans’ pain and anger at the health insurance industry. A thoughtful New Yorker article delves into uncomfortable realities underlying that reaction.

Supervised Drug Injection Site OpensΒ

Β

Rhode Island is opening the first supervised drug consumption site, by the nonprofit Project Weber/RENEW, outside New York City this week. These sites, also called overdose prevention centers, may seem counterintuitive at first: How does allowing people to use illegal drugs on site, with freely provided sterile supplies under the supervision of people trained to respond to overdoses, ethically address drug addiction? But research shows multiple beneficial effects at centers across the world applying the principles of harm reduction.

Father-Son Duo Pursue Nursing

We wrote in our newsletter last week about the rapid increase in male nurses over the past two decades. For father-and-son pair Greg and Satchel Nash, answering the call was a family affair. Satchel, 27, first followed his dad’s footsteps when he became a firefighter and EMT. Then Greg decided to pursue a lifelong interest in nursing, and Satchel followed suit. The pair both entered an accelerated nursing program at the University of Arkansas Little Rock to become nurses together.

CARING COLLECTIVELY WITH TOGATHER

Reflect, Recharge, and Read Your Way into 2025

Whether you’re reflecting on 2024 or preparing for 2025, a good book can lead the way. Consider gifting one for yourselfβ€”or maybe a co-worker you know could use more care this holiday season.Β

  • The β€œFix-It-All” Friend: For the nurse who somehow becomes the department therapist, mediator, and unofficial HR repβ€”on top of their clinical care. Start pouring from a full cup in the New Year.Β

  • The Weary Traveler: Whether you’re taking on your first role or are a seasoned professional with decades of experience, the journey through healthcare can be exhausting. Remember that rest is resistance and recharge with this read.

  • The Compassion-Fatigued Comedian: This nurse cracks jokes to cope, but probably needs a nap, a hug, and a therapist. No shame, but you deserve courageous well-being.Β

Let’s close out the year with collective care and a good book. Find more personas and recommendations in the Holiday Book Guideβ€”because care isn’t one-size-fits-all.
