Good Morning, Readers!

It’s CRNA Week! A big shoutout to all the CRNAs out thereβ€”and CRNA students, like our contributor, Casey Green! Your work is meaningful and the difference you make is profound.

On a personal note, I still remember the name of the CRNA that helped me deliver my first child. She was so kind and focused on me, which gave me so much peaceβ€”I will never forget that. ❀️

Helping New Nurses Thrive

The first year of nursing can be rough, especially when trying to look after yourself. That’s where nurse retentionists come in, helping new grad nurses and nurse leaders navigate bedside stress. The turnover at Essential Healthβ€”a system operating in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin with two nurse retentionistsβ€”is 12.6%, below the national benchmark of 18.4%. β€œOur job really is to be a nurse for nurses, so they can take care of our patients,” one nurse retentionist said.

CDC Advises Testing for Bird Flu

New guidance from the CDC recommends that health care workers test all patients with influenza A specifically for H5N1. Though the agency maintains that risk to the public of bird flu infections remains low, the accelerated subtyping of the bird flu type is an attempt to better track human cases as questions remain about the outbreak in dairy cows. The guidance comes after the first death of a person infected with H5N1 last week.

Norovirus Makes the β€œQuad-demic”

Just when you thought you were ready for the annual triple-demic of flu, Covid and RSV, along comes this year’s β€œquad-demic,” adding abnormally high norovirus cases to the usual winter virus season of respiratory illnesses. From coast to coast, norovirus truly seems to be everywhere at the momentβ€”even complicating the response to California’s wildfires with outbreaks in the shelters set up for evacuees. Remind patients of the importance of hand hygiene in avoiding this pesky bug.

LEADING THE WAY WITH CRITICAL CARE CASEY

Nurse Networking: The Elevator Pitch

What is networking? It's all about building relationships. Remember, it's not just about what you know, but who knows you. Networking is a vital part of nursing. Along with experience, networking can help you grow professionally and personally.Β

One networking strategy to try? An elevator pitch. It's a brief introduction (one minute or less!) that tells someone who you are, what you do, and asks for a connection.

The key is to convey one or two things that make you memorable and open the door to further conversation. Keep it brief and focused. It may feel uncomfortable, but think of it as meeting a new colleague. Be ready to share your contact information (or take theirs) and make sure you follow up.Β

Happy networking and stay tuned for the next installment of Leading the Way, where I talk you through using LinkedIn to network!
