A surgical robot called spaceMIRA achieved a milestone by performing its first surgery in zero gravity at the International Space Station. Developed by startup Virtual Incision, surgeons remotely operated the two-pound compact robot on Earth: they controlled the robot’s hands to provide tension to simulated tissue (rubber bands) and dissect the elastic tissue with scissors. The operation demonstrated spaceMIRA’s potential for handling medical emergencies during long space missions and improving healthcare access in remote areas on Earth.

Just when you think you’ve seen it all in the hospital, a car comes crashing through the emergency room lobby. At least that’s what happened at St.
David’s North Austin Medical Center, with the crash killing the driver and injuring five others, including a child who sustained life-threatening injuries. Investigations suggest the collision was unintentional. Thankfully, the building remained structurally sound despite damage to the ER doors and an aquarium. Emergency services were temporarily redirected, but the facility remained operational with a makeshift triage area.

This Legionnaire Isn’t French |
Health officials in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, have linked a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak to the municipal water supply. In any given year in the US, there are usually dozens of individual outbreaks, most often linked to healthcare facilities. Minnesota has seen 14 cases
of Legionnaires’ disease since April 2023. While the drinking water in Grand Rapids is reportedly safe, officials urge caution with showers, noting that inhaling contaminated steam or mist can transmit the disease.Â
