What do a quantum scientist, a nurse, and an economist all have in common? They’re all working to fight global poverty through the Data, Economics, and Design of Policy (DEDP) program at
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Yann Bourgeois worked as a nurse in Belgium before learning about DEDP while pursuing an MPH. After graduating, he became a labor economist at the World Bank in Washington, showing how a nursing foundation prepares people to take on the world’s biggest challenges.

Twenty-two years ago, Hayley Good entered the world at just 1 lb, 9 oz after just 24 weeks in her mother’s womb. Her twin sister died after just two days, but Hayley managed to make it, largely due to the incredible care of her nurses, she says. Two decades later, she’s paying that forward. Having graduated with a nursing degree this May, Hayley is joining the staff at the same NICU that nurtured her first months.

It’s often said that measles outbreaks are the canary in the coal mine, a harbinger threatening the return of other vaccine-preventable diseases. In the wake of multiple measles outbreaks, pertussis is now surging across the US, too. Approximately 5,000 cases were reported in the first five months of this year. It’s unclear whether this is simply a return to
pre-pandemic levels after cases dropped during the pandemic or a worrisome increase from low vaccination rates.

Introducing Tesiah Coleman |
Hi, I’m Tesiah! I’ve been a nurse for seven years 👩🏽⚕️.
My background is in birth work. First as a doula, lactation counselor, and RN, then as an NP providing community prenatal care. With an immunocompromised son at home, the COVID pandemic led me to transition into health tech leadership. I loved building virtual care teams, leading quality improvement, and developing health equity education! However, despite promised resources and flexibility in health tech, my team still faced burnout, moral injury, and injustices.
This inspired Togather. Our mission is to support, connect, and educate healthcare providers working toward health justice through:
💞 Live healing circles to nurture well-being and process moral injury
📲 An app for community, knowledge sharing, and innovation
🌱 CE-accredited health justice education to unlearn, learn, and grow
🫱🏿🫲 Mentorship for support and professional development
