HUDDLE

Hey-O Nursing Beat Friends!

It’s time for another installment of Mystery Diagnosis Monday! This one may even have our pediatric oncology nurses scratching their heads.

🧪 This rare condition occurs with two vascular tumors which are also quite rare: kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) and tufted angioma (TA).

🧪 Characterizations include coagulopathy with thrombocytopenia, low fibrinogen, (hypofibrinogenemia), and anemia.

🧪 The tumors generally occur in infants and young children and can become life threatening due to the risk of bleeding and organ dysfunction.

Think you know the answer. Check if you’re right, here!

Volunteers Wanted

The American Red Cross is urgently calling for volunteer health professionals — ”RN, LPN, LVN, APRN, NP, EMT, Paramedic, MD/DO or PA with an active, unencumbered license” — to assist in disaster response efforts amid increasing crises. They offer disaster training and need help with direct client assessment and care, health education, assistance with daily activities, and more. You must be available for a minimum of 10 days, and the Red Cross particularly wants volunteers willing to deploy. Direct questions to your Local Red Cross or RedCrossNurse@redcross.org.

AI Worries

As generative AI becomes more commonplace in healthcare, so does patients’ apprehension towards the technology, a recent Wolters Kluwer Health survey suggests. Some 80% of respondents expressed concerns about the transparency of AI due to unclear sources and potential inaccuracies. Still, that apprehension drops to 63% if patients know the AI tool stems from a reliable healthcare source frequently updated by medical professionals. Notably, 86% stress the necessity of medical professionals’ involvement in creating AI content.

Rallying for Change

Nurses at Seton Medical Center in California are protesting job cuts and demanding better benefits following AHMC Healthcare’s decision to eliminate 33 jobs. They cite concerns about outdated technology, unrepaired equipment, and reduced hours affecting patient care. The California Nurses Association contests AHMC’s new medical plan as inferior, while employees worry about job insecurity — despite the company’s reported $42 million profit last year. AHMC purchased Seton in 2020 following its bankruptcy, but staff say AHMC has only accelerated Seton’s demise.

How Do You Know if You Qualify for a Remote Nursing Job Post?

Remote nurse job postings can be confusing to decipher! Here is how we recommend reviewing a remote nurse job posting at Nurse Fern:

  1. Ignore the initial location listed: This is often corporate headquarters, and they may look for nurses in different locations.

  2. Scroll to the basic requirements: Hopefully, they list the type of license and clinical experience required. Do you meet these basic requirements? Yes, move on to #3.

  3. Evaluate preferred requirements: Do you meet any? No, that’s ok! You don’t need to meet the preferred requirements to apply.

  4. Read the rest of the job posting to see if there are other residence requirements or sneaky mentions of in-office time or travel.

  5. If you meet basic requirements and like what the rest of the job posting offers, smash that apply button ASAP!
