How Does Your Salary Stack Up Across the US?
The average US salary for RNs is $82,750, which exceeds the nation’s median household income of $70,784 in 2021 (but not the average household income of $121,840, likely because of exceptionally high earnings among the top 2%). But that figure ranges dramatically from $60K in South Dakota, where it’s below the median household income of $66,143, to $124K in California, where it’s substantially higher than the median household income of $84,907.
Becker’s Hospital Review has a list of the annual RN wage, how that translates to an hourly rate, and the median household income for every US state, based on salary data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and income data from the Kaiser Family Foundation. For those rootless souls able to travel from place to place and sometimes take grueling assignments, travel nursing salaries can rise as high as $170,680, according to NursingProcess.

Nurse Salary-Fixer May Face Up To 10 Years in Prison
A staffing executive at three home health agencies in Las Vegas is facing
price-fixing charges for involvement in a conspiracy to price-fix nurses’ wages, according to a filing by the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada. The indictment against Eduardo Lopez violates the Sherman Act, the nation’s first antitrust law passed in 1890,
which prohibits any attempt to create a monopoly within a particular industry.
”Lopez and other unnamed co-conspirators are charged with agreeing to suppress and eliminate competition for the services of nurses between March 2016 and May 2019… [by] participating in a series of meetings and communications to fix wages of nurses,” the office stated. The penalty for violating the Sherman Act is up to 10 years in prison and a $1 million fine for individuals or a $100 million fine for corporations.

States Join PA/NP Titles and Scope of Practice Debates
The change from “Physician Assistant” to “Physician Associate,” as the American Academy of Physician Associates decided in 2021, has been slow to take hold even as the opposition from some physician groups remains strong. And the controversy over the scope of practice and who can use “doctor” after earning a doctorate has always been fraught for NPs and PAs.
But now, state legislature involvement is stepping up. For example, legislation in Florida would prevent NPs who have earned their doctorate from using the title “doctor” even in brochures and business cards, limiting them only to “advanced practice registered nurses” or APRNs. Meanwhile, eight other states are contemplating bills related to expanding the scope of practice for advanced practitioners and pharmacists.
