Nurses at Jefferson Healthβs Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia, represented by Einstein Nurses United (an affiliate of theΒ Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals), have voted to authorize a strike, with 96% in favor. The nurses want better workplace violence prevention, resources for caregivers, and staffing, including the recruitment and retention of nurses. Einstein Medical says that should a strike occur, it will βimplement a comprehensive strike contingency planβ to keep operations going.

Should Nazi-Era Medical Terms Still Be Used?
The Austrian scientist Dr. Hans Asperger is hailed as a hero who saved children with a condition that would later be termed Aspergerβs syndrome by the Nazis. But he also condemned dozens of children to Nazi killing centers. The New York Times has a fascinating article about whether Aspergerβs and other eponyms like
Alzheimerβs, Parkinsonβs, and Hodgkinβs diseases should be phased out, given their connection to the Naziβs National Socialist doctors. However, not all eponyms have a dark past, such as Freyβs syndrome, named after a female researcher and a victim of the Holocaust.

1,800 Providence Nurses Went on Strike
On Monday, June 19th, more than 1,300 nurses from Providence Portland Medical Center, along with several hundred nurses from Providence Seaside and a Providence Health System home health and hospice unit, went on strike. The last offer to nurses was contingent on no work stoppage, and Providence warned earlier this month that economic proposals following a strike would be less lucrative. However, the Oregon Nurses Association says Providence has put profits ahead of patients and staff and that nurses feel undervalued.
