Time for a Social Media Rest?Β

If there were ever a time to consider a brief break from social media, it might be now. While there are undeniable benefits to social media, too much use can take a toll on our mental health and self-image. Different platforms have different vibes, but the potential addictiveness of any platform means taking occasional breaks can be healthy. Check out this journalist’s experience attempting a social media fast and what she learned.

Netflix Series Entertains and Educates

Do you remember hearing about Belle Gibson? The Australian scammer rose to fame as a wellness guru while persuading the world she was using diet and alternative medicine to manage multiple cancer diagnoses. Her story has captured the world’s attention again with the new Netflix series Apple Cider Vinegar. Though a cautionary tale about pseudoscience, the show reveals gaps in the modern medical system that drive people toward charlatans. After you watch, check out what’s fact and what’s fiction.

Who Gets Care? When AI Decides, Bias Can Be Deadly

A well-known healthcare company used an algorithm to decide which patients should receive extra medical support.Β

The problem? It used healthcare spending as a measure of need, ignoring systemic barriers to care. Because Black patients, on average, spend less on healthcare due to economic inequities, the algorithm falsely concluded they were healthier than their white counterparts with the same conditions.

The result? Black patients were 50% less likely to be referred for critical care, even when they were as sick or sicker than their white counterparts.

This isn’t an isolated incident. From kidney function calculations to cancer risk assessments, biased algorithms are woven into medicine, often without scrutiny.

What can we do?

  • Demand transparency in AI-driven healthcare tools.

  • Push for race-conscious algorithms that address disparities rather than reinforce them.

  • Share your experiencesβ€”have you seen algorithmic bias in practice?

Healthcare should be just. Let’s make it better, together.
