An Invasion of Privacy |
Nurse practitioner Susanna Gibson’s promising campaign for a US House seat crumbled when the Washington Post revealed a recorded video of her engaging in explicit acts with her husband online. Despite the privacy breach, the Democratic candidate only lost by less than 1,000 votes. In an interview with POLITICO, Gibson discussed the emotional toll of the invasion of her privacy, the need for more explicit boundaries between personal and online lives for political candidates, and her determination to hold accountable people who disseminate explicit content and advocate for legal remedies for revenge porn.

Violence in the Hallways |
Following a violent attack at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, two nurses and a medical resident sustained lacerations but were in stable condition after receiving treatment in the emergency room. The assailant, Firdousi Abdul-Hakim, was visiting a patient in the pediatric intensive care unit with another individual when the pair got
into a domestic dispute, ending with Abdul-Hakim slashing the responding medical professionals with a knife. Abdul-Hakim was promptly arrested and charged with aggravated assault and weapon-related offenses while some pediatric ICU patients were transferred to nearby hospitals.

In a significant medical breakthrough, the FDA approved the first CRISPR gene-editing-based medicine, a therapy called Casgevy, for sickle cell disease in patients aged 12 and older. While the treatment is effective, its $2.2 million price tag may keep it out of the hands of those who need it most. Moreover, due to its complexity, only nine
authorized hospitals currently offer the specialized therapy. Similar accessibility issues also exist for Lyfgenia, another (non-CRISPR) sickle cell treatment the FDA approved, with its $3.1 million cost.
