Reclassifying Cancers
Learning you have the βbig Cβ has long been regarded as one of the most terrifying diagnoses you can receive. But today, we know that not all cancers should be as frightening as the word implies, argues two oncologists in The New York Times. Itβs time to give a different name to certain slow-growing cancers, such as some prostate cancers and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), that donβt require the level of aggressive treatment that a cancer diagnosis often suggests is necessary.

Prison Nurse Keeps License
An inmate died because she denied the staffβs request to give him treatment, but a George prison nurse will keep her license even after losing her job, according to the final judgment of the Georgia Board of Nursing. Annaleen Visser, the former nursing supervisor at Cobb County Adult Detention Center, refused to allow the jailβs lab technician to evaluate Kevil Wingo, who was begging for help before he died of a perforated ulcer. Visser believed he was faking it.

Letβs Talk About Death
Few people look forward to discussing end-of-life care, but 40-year-old nurse Julie McFadden thinks itβs time to remove the taboo. McFadden, a hospice care nurse in California, is speaking out on TikTok about what hospice care involves and what it means when a patient chooses medical aid in dying, also known as physician-assisted death, currently legal in ten states and Washington DC. Not everyone agrees with McFaddenβs advocacy, but at least dialogue is happening.Β
