As the global demand for nurses heats up, countries are resolving their shortages by poaching talent from other countries. According to the Wall Street Journal, Australia has been one of the most aggressive perpetrators, offering special sign-up bonuses and fast-tracked visas. But this poaching has negatively impacted the health security of less developed nations such as Zimbabwe, which has considered criminalizing the active recruitment of Zimbabwe healthcare workers. More than 70 other countries have introduced laws in recent years to make hiring healthcare workers from abroad easier.

Demanding More Security
|

|
After a shooting at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital left a security guard dead and another worker injured, the Oregon-based hospital outlined tighter security measures. These included metal detectors at each hospital; bullet-slowing film at main entrances, emergency departments, and glass in internal entrances; and trained guards with tasers. But the Oregon Nurses Association wants more security. They propose metal detectors and security at all entrances, restricted access to parking garages, and a zero-tolerance policy for violence.

A “Historic” Contract
|

About 8,000 New York State Nurses Association nurses at NYC Health + Hospitals facilities and mayoral agencies are receiving a new 5-year “historic” contract. (Mayoral nurses care for first responders and those receiving assistance from city agencies). It boasts a $16,006 wage increase in year one and a $5,551 increase in year two of
the contract. Other benefits include staffing ratios that extend beyond hospital settings, a systemwide float pool, a staffing subcommittee, and an expanded pool of mediators for staffing disputes.
