HUDDLE

Good Morning, Readers!

It is a great pleasure to introduce myself as the new Managing Editor for TNB! I’ll be taking over for Abby McCoy, who I think we can all agree has done a fabulous job as interim editor over the last two months.

A little about me: I've been a nurse for over 10 years and I’ve worked as a med-surg nurse, a pediatric nurse, a nursing instructor, a freelance health writer, and now, your editor! I have also been the mastermind behind the Supply Room column for the past several months, but I am thrilled to take part in TNB in an even greater capacity.

Feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn or drop me a line here; my inbox is always open!

Nursing Greatness Recognized

The Simms/Mann Family Foundation announced the 2024 recipients of their Off the Chart: Rewarding Nursing Greatness recognition, honoring 40 nurses from four major Los Angeles health systems with $10,000 each. This initiative, now in its second year, addresses the urgent nursing crisis by highlighting the essential role of nurses and encouraging investment in the profession. The campaign aims to reverse nurse attrition and improve work conditions. Recipients were chosen for their leadership, creativity, and dedicationβ€”learn their stories here.

Gun Violence a Public Health Crisis

U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy declared gun violence a public health crisis, highlighting the surge in firearm-related injuries and deaths in recent years. He called for measures like banning assault weapons, universal background checks, industry regulation, and promoting safe firearm storage. These proposals require legislative action, facing strong opposition from the gun lobby and some lawmakers. In his 40-page report, Murthy urged increased research and education on gun safety, drawing parallels to past public health campaigns against smoking.

Is It Time to Ditch Daily Multivitamins?Β

Daily multivitamins don’t extend life expectancy and may even increase the risk of early death, a major study found. Researchers analyzed health records from nearly 400,000 healthy adults over two decades, revealing a 4% higher mortality risk among multivitamin users. Despite multivitamin’s popularity, with nearly half of UK adults and a third of US adults using them, their purported benefits of multivitamins are questionable and overstated and they carry potential harms like iron overload, experts said. They instead recommend a healthy diet rich in natural nutrients over supplements.
