Healthcare starts with you. This is your beat.

β˜€οΈ Happy Wednesday!

The past few days in Philly at the NTI conference have been a great whirlwind. Meeting so many nurses across the country has been fun while sharing TNB and connectRN’s journey. It’s also been so special to see our CEO and my dear friend, Tamara AL-Yassin, speak on her Bedside to Business journey. Are you at NTI today? Stop by and say hello at booth 337!

Stay curious!

Joint Commission: Nurses Should Drive Safety and Quality Initiatives

Given nurses’ breadth of knowledge, work, and connections, they are in a unique position to promote safety and improve care, according to the Joint Commission. Human factors, assessment misses, and communication breakdowns are the common root causes of serious safety incidents. Nurses have the knowledge and experience to create safer systems that account for human factors, are typically the first to assess and notice subtle changes in a patient’s condition, and use tools that can reduce the risk of communication errors.Β

Patient Records Removed from Shredding Bin at Indiana Hospital

Northwest Health-La Porte (formerly La Porte Hospital) notified the US Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights about a significant data breach. Patient records were removed from shredding bins at one of its old facilities that were set to be demolished. These records included everything from patients’ names to medical records and Social Security numbers to insurance information. The hospital learned of the breach when YouTube videos about the records were posted online.Β

NY Nurses Association Approves Labor Deal with St. Lawrence Health

The New York State Nurses Association has overwhelmingly approved new contracts with St. Lawrence Health’s Massena, Canton-Potsdam, and Gouverneur Hospitals. The five-year dealΒ brings wage increases of at least 6 percent to 276 nurses. The contracts will also improve and lower the cost of health benefits by joining the NYSNA Benefits Fund. It also establishes a new safe staffing committee, giving St. Lawrence Health nurses a voice in staffing standards for the first time.

Wise Words from Nurse Board Members

β€œWhat I have come to realize is that as a board member, you become a voice for the voiceless; as the person with the seat at the table, you are one person representing the interests of many. In this position of power, it is important to use your voice to magnify diversity. By bringing diverse experiences into the conversation, you will be able to tackle the issues that are important to members in a more nuanced and effective way. For me, board service is both a mechanism for giving to the community and a way to facilitate change by having a voice. When I serve, my voice is not just my own; it is also a voice for others”.
