Military-Civilian Nursing Partnerships

Military medical personnel need clinical training that’s relevant to combat medicine and general hospital care. What better place to get experience in both than civilian trauma centers and systems? A new article in Critical Care Nurse describes a partnership that enabled U.S. Air Force nurses to keep their skills sharp with civilian hospital experience. The study is one of several in this special issue that focus on the intersection of disaster, nursing care, and the military.

Embracing Progeria with Humor

Progeria is an extremely rare genetic disease that causes dramatic, rapid aging starting in childhood. Those with it have a startling appearance, but that didn’t bother Sammy Bosso, who joked about looking β€œa bit like E.T.” The longest-living person with progeria, Bosso was so good-humored that he handed out candy on Halloween at a friend’s houseβ€”just to delight in children’s reactions to his appearance. The long-time advocate passed away Saturday at age 28 after leading a singularly remarkable life.

Climate Change Affecting Health

With Hurricane Milton hitting so soon after Helene, it’s clear that the effects of climate change will continue to threaten people’s health and safety.Β Β Some health effects of climate change are less obvious and occur every day, however. One example: increases in allergies and asthma, as pediatric allergist-immunologist Elizabeth Matsui recently discussed at the American Academy of Pediatrics meeting. The suggestions and resources she shared are helpful to all healthcare providers of children and adults.

Mystery Diagnosis Minute

Welcome back for another Mystery Diagnosis Minute! We’re going to keep delving into some spooky diagnoses that seem too strange to be true!Β

🎃 This rare genetic disorder affects the brain and causes the patient to not sleepβ€”which ultimately becomes so severe that it causes severe physical and mental collapse.

🎃 This lack of sleep generally starts when the patient hits middle age, however, it can develop at any time during the patient’s life.Β

🎃 These patients often have concomitant dementia, hallucinations, and Parkinson’s-like symptoms.Β
