Last year, the FDA finalized a rule change allowing more retail pharmacies, including large chains and mail-order companies, to sell abortion pills. And now the country’s two largest pharmacy chains, CVS and Walgreens, have announced plans to start selling mifepristone, drawing praise from President Biden. These pills will be available with a prescription at select locations in certain states, a significant development for abortion access, particularly for patients who face travel barriers. However, the Supreme Court is set to review a decision that could restrict access to mifepristone.

Record Setting Transplant

Bert Janssen, diagnosed with cardiomyopathy at 17, defied expectations by becoming the longest-surviving heart transplant recipient, setting a Guinness World Record of 39 years and 100 days. He takes the title from Canadian Harold Sokyrka, who held the previous record of 34 years and 359 days in 2021 and received his heart in 1986. Janssen received his new heart in 1984 at Harefield Hospital in England after suffering a tragic car accident. Despite side effects from medication, Janssen remains active and maintains a healthy lifestyle.

A ProPublica investigation suggests the US government is not doing enough to manage the drug shortage crisis for parenteral penicillin G, the only medication with documented efficacy for syphilis during pregnancy. The drug has been in short supply for eight of the last 20 years, exacerbating an increase in syphilis cases, particularly among pregnant women and newborns. According to ProPublica, declaring a federal emergency is just one of several approaches the government could take to alleviate the issue.
