One is the Loneliest Number |
Everyone knows smoking is unhealthy, but few may realize being lonely can be just as harmful to your health. And while smoking rates have declined over the past four decades, loneliness has increased. Not everyone who lives alone is lonely, but more Americans live alone today than ever before β about one in six, according to a new CDC
report. The report also found that 6.4% of adults living alone experience depression compared to 4.1% of those living with others.

Drugs in Demand |
Drug shortages have been growing in hospitals and other medical facilities in recent years, and the Federal Trade Commission is on the case. The federal agency has just launched an investigation into the role group purchasing organizations (GPOs) and wholesalers play in a supply-and-demand game that potentially endangers patientsβ lives. More than 300 medicines have experienced shortages in the past four years, and some of the problems may lie in patent abuses and GPO behaviors.Β

Suing to Work |
Four nurses are suing the state of New York to get back their nursing licenses, while 50 others refused to surrender them in the first place. The nurses are among the hundreds of people caught up in Operation Nightingale, the fake nursing degree scam operated out of three now-closed Florida nursing schools. The 54 New York nurses have worked for three years without complaints and submitted proof of their class attendance and clinical hours.

TECH TUESDAYΒ WITH NURSE MANNY
|
Da Vinciβs Eyes in Tech |
Inspired by the recent TNB interview highlighting Paul Coyne's remarkable journey into nursing and healthcare innovation, and February being heart month, I wanted to explore stroke care and some ways I think health tech can enhance stroke rehabilitation by touching on the human spirit.Β
We've long recognized the impact of creative arts-based therapy in stroke rehabilitation, offering patients not just physical recovery but emotional and psychological healing. Da Vinci Eye AR Art Projector app, a tool that can potentially improve patient care through its augmented reality capabilities, could significantly enhance stroke rehab, enabling patients to engage in art therapy with
newfound ease and flexibility. Imagine a stroke patient navigating the complexities of recovery, finding solace and strength in drawing a picture of a loved one.Β
Leveraging tools like the Da Vinci Eye app in stroke rehab, I think, not only aids physical recovery but also marks tangible steps forward in using tech to expand the care nursing and allied professions provide.

Tax Season Simplified |
As February unfolds, Nurse Sam takes these steps to navigate the tax season easily and efficiently.
Organize Your Documents: Sam starts with gathering all tax-related documents. This includes W-2s, receipts for work-related expenses (like scrubs or medical equipment), and any documentation for additional income or deductions.Β
Understand Healthcare Deductions: Nurses often have unique deductions related to their profession, such as licensing fees, uniforms, and potentially travel expenses if they are a travel nurse. Knowing these can significantly lower tax liability.
Consider Retirement Contributions: Sam emphasizes the importance of retirement contributions, like those to a 401(k) or an IRA. Contributions can reduce taxable income, and itβs never too early or too late to start planning for retirement.
Samβs approach makes tax season more manageable. With organization and knowledge, nurses can handle their taxes confidently and find savings along the way.
