RFK Jr. Confirmed at HHS

The Senate confirmation of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. for Health & Human Service Secretary led to an outcry of concern from nurses and doctors on social media. Many shared information about vaccine-preventable diseases they fear will return. Since the confirmation, Louisiana has stopped promoting mass vaccination, a new executive order prohibits federal funding to schools requiring COVID-19 vaccination, and the administration announced firing over 5,000 employees at the NIH and CDC, including most of the famous Epidemic Intelligence Service.

Nurse Visa Applications Dip

The number of new visa applications from nurses seeking to immigrate to the U.S. has fallen 4.6% from last year, according to a new report from CGFNS International, a nonprofit organization that validates foreign nurses’ credentials. But levels remain higher than pre-pandemic ones, so interest in migrating to the U.S. remains high. Just over half of foreign nurses (51%) come from the Philippines, followed by nurses from Canada (8%), Kenya (7%), Nigeria (5%), and Ghana (4%).

First Responders Seek PTSD Treatment

Advice columnist Eric Thomas received a letter from a first responder last week asking how to seek help with what they suspected was PTSD. This week he published some of the many encouraging responses he received from firefighters, cops, and other first responders who sought help for their posttraumatic distress. PTSD can be a serious issue for nurses as well, and the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing has an excellent article on improving resilience in nurses affected by PTSD.
