Been There, Done That

Mayo Clinic nurse Julie Pulmano doesn’t just care for her patients at Mayo’s Bariatric Center in Floridaβ€”she also inspires them, because she used to be a patient herself. Pulmano was working on Mayo’s surgical floor when the bariatric center opened in 2007. Having always struggled with her weight, she tried and left the program in 2012 before successfully re-entering in 2014. When she joined the staff last year, she began sharing her story to inspire incoming patients.

Another Shingles Vaccine Benefit

Avoiding shingles is reason enough to follow the CDC’s recommendation to get a shingles vaccine after turning 50. But a new study offers another potential benefit: delaying dementia. The updated vaccine was linked to a 17% improvement in time without dementia over six years of follow-up. That translates to 164 additional days without a dementia diagnosis in those who eventually develop dementia.

Double Debt

Medical schools that don’t charge tuition are certainly helpful to future doctors, but physicians aren’t the only ones saddled with educational debt when entering the workforce. In fact, healthcare workers as a whole carry more debt than other workers, according to a new study in JAMA Health Forum. About 27% of healthcare workers had educational debt compared to 17% of other workers. But that’s not allβ€”healthcare workers also had more medical debt (14%) than other workers (11%).
