Rebound Reversing?

It seemed that Florida had been the only state making progress in managing the national nursing shortage, but the outlook isn’t entirely rosy. Despite a drop in nurse turnover rates from 32% in 2022 to 20% in 2023, Florida will still fall short in LPNs and, worse, nursing faculty by 2030. Though the state should still exceed its RN and NP needs by then, it may not last long without enough educators for new nurses.

Student Lifesaver

Nursing student Demi Murphy hasn’t graduated yet, but she’s already saved a life. The third-year nursing student at Royal Liverpool University Hospital in England saw a man’s car in the middle of the road while heading to work after lunch. With the man not breathing or responsive, she immediately began CPR while her friend called emergency services. Her quick action ensured that 37-year-old John McKeown survived to spend Christmas with his wife and two young children.

Need a New Year’s resolution for 2024? If you partake of alcohol, consider cutting back this year to reap the benefits of fewer tooth cavities and a lower risk of esophageal cancer, both identified in a new report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Reducing alcohol intake might reduce the risk of other cancers as well, especially if you flush after drinking, according to STAT’s  Q&A with one of the report’s authors, American Cancer Society epidemiologist Farhad Islami

TECH TUESDAY WITH NURSE MANNY

Retinal Studies

A new AI diagnostic tool was recently published in Jama Network Open. Researchers in Korea have developed deep learning algorithms that can screen for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and assess symptom severity from retinal photographs with 100% accuracy.

This is groundbreaking because ASD diagnosis currently faces challenges due to the shortage of trained clinicians. Previous studies have shown structural changes in the retinas of those with ASD. An objective AI screening tool utilizing retinal images could alleviate issues with the accessibility and reliability of assessments.

As nurses, we understand the constraints of the healthcare system. AI tools that can accurately screen for conditions from medical images could expand access to care enormously.
