Insuring Immigrants |
Despite increasing illegal border crossings, several U.S. states are expanding taxpayer-funded health insurance programs to include immigrants β even those without legal status. Currently, 11 states and Washington, D.C., cover healthcare for a million low-income immigrants, with enrollment expected to double by 2025 as at least seven states initiate or expand coverage. However, an estimated half of US residents without authorization lack insurance, more than five times the rate for US citizens. Pandemic-driven awareness of the importance of insurance, efforts to reduce the uninsured rate, and
appeals from hospitals are driving the insurance expansions.

Contracting Montefiore |
Nurses at Montefiore hospitals in Mount Vernon and New Rochelle have ratified new 3-year contracts, which include wage increases, safe-staffing ratios, and improved benefits. More than 400 nurses at the Montefiore Nyack Hospital are voting on a similar deal, which would include safe-staffing ratios, substantial wage hikes (averaging 14%
in the first year, up to 20% for new nurses), union pension inclusion, and recognition of Juneteenth and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holidays.Β
