Nurses Eliminate CLABSIs |
When the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania began caring for a new population of patients with pulmonary artery catheters, it saw a sharp increase in central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). To address the issue, the cardiac progressive care unit implemented nurse-driven central catheter rounds three times a weekβand effectively eliminated
new infections after 3 years! A critical part of the success involved switching from standard gauze to a transparent dressing with chlorhexidine gluconate. Learn what else the nurses did to reduce the infection rate here.

Second Awake Kidney Transplant |
Northwestern Medicine has now conducted its second awake kidney transplant. The patient, 74-year-old Harry Stackhouse, felt no pain and was home 36 hours later. Part of the AWAKE Kidney Program, the procedure aims to avoid general anesthesia risks by injecting a spinal anesthetic instead. Though initially reluctant, Stackhouse received his new kidney from his daughter.
Northwesternβs first awake transplant occurred in May, and the patient, 28-year-old John Nicholas, continues to do well.

Superbugs Spread Through Families |
Hospitals can contribute to the community spread of MRSA and other antibiotic-resistant infections simply by discharging patients, new research suggests. The study found that family members of recently discharged hospital patients have a higher risk of acquiring superbugs, even if the patient didnβt have the infection. This risk increases with longer hospital stays.
Researchers stress that hospitals need to implement more stringent infection control practices and MRSA testing before discharging patients.
