Most people want to increase the amount of healthy foods they eat, but what counts as “healthy”? The FDA has just updated that definition to include more foods, including those with more fat, such as salmon and several nuts, seeds, and oils. It also removed some ultra-processed

California Nurses’ “Living Hell” |
A California addiction recovery program managed by the state’s nurse licensing board was supposed to help nurses with substance abuse problems. But instead, it’s made their lives a “living hell,” according to a recent article. Up to 18% of nurses — almost one in five
— screened positive for some type of substance use problem in a 2022 study, though only about 7% of them met the criteria for substance use disorder. How does your state board handle substance use problems?

First Severe Bird Flu Case |
The 64 confirmed human cases of H5N1 bird flu to date in the U.S. have been mild — until now. The CDC has now confirmed the first severe human case of bird flu in the U.S. The patient, currently hospitalized in Louisiana, is also the first case linked to exposure from a backyard flock. Meanwhile, H5N1 bird flu is spreading like wildfire through California’s dairy cattle herds — enough that experts are doubting the USDA’s official line on how transmission is occurring.
