Baby Gene-Editing Scientists Back in the Lab after Prison

Two years before the pandemic upended our lives, a Chinese scientist dropped a bombshell on the world scientific community: he had used CRISPR to create genetically modified babies. The blowback for this modern-day “Frankenstein” was swift and brutal, followed by a Chinese court’s three-year jail sentence for “illegal medical practices.” But now He Jiankui is out of jail—and back in the medical lab, reports NPR. Read what he’s up to next.

RaDonda Vaught Headed to Costa Rica with Other Nurses

After her conviction for a medication error that resulted in a woman’s death at Vanderbilt, RaDonda Vaught hasn’t spoken much with the media. But she is comfortable speaking with her colleagues, especially given how many nurses supported her and organizations like the American Nursing Association called her conviction a “dangerous precedent.” Vaught will join a seven-day “healing” trip to Costa Rica hosted by influencer “Nurse Erica.” Nurses can apply to register for the $2,500 trip through the end of July.

Nearly Half of Nurses Report “Culture of Racism”

Nurses of color are excluded in the workplace “Every. Single. Day,” according to one nurse who spoke with Becker’s about the experience of being a nurse of color. Other conversations focused on what nurses of color want white nurses to know. Two sets of discussions arose after findings from a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation survey found that nearly 80% of nurses have witnessed or experienced discrimination from patients, and 60% have from colleagues.

VirtuSense Technologies

Have you ever been startled as a patient morphs into an impromptu acrobat, taking an unanticipated plunge? The aftermath is far from graceful - patient injuries, an avalanche of paperwork, probing investigations, and a hearty serving of regret. VirtuSense Technologies offers AI-powered solutions that predict and prevent patient falls. The VSTBalance is an automated fall-risk assessment tool aiming for long-term fall prevention. The VSTOne is meticulously designed for acute care, and VSTAlert is tailored for post-acute settings. These solutions leverage AI, LiDAR, and other buzzwords to vigilantly monitor patients and alert staff 30 to 65 seconds before a potential bed or chair exit. Moreover, they have adjustable sensitivity to cater to the unique needs of different patients.

Remember, while traditional bed alarms merely alert without preventing falls, VirtuSense's VST LiDAR models reduce alarm fatigue and actively prevent falls. I consider them MVPs in our never-ending battle against gravity and our personal "fall whisperers."
