Nursing Shortage Could Be Worse Than Previously Thought

A new analysis paints an even dire picture of the nursing shortage in the US. The 2020 HRSA Nurse Workforce Projections estimate that 98% of the total nurse demand will be met in 2030. But estimates from Nurse Journal suggest that only 94% of the demand will be met, and an additional 206,553 nurses will be needed by 2030. The analysis also found that 42 states may come up short with their nurse needs in 2030 while eight states β€” Vermont, Maine, Rhode Island, West Virginia, Alabama, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and New Hampshire β€” may have a surplus.

US News & World Report May Be In Legal Trouble Over Hospital Rankings

US News & World Report is under fire for its hospital rankings, which it suggests to patients may be more accurate than physician referrals. San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu says the rankings, which impact patients’ healthcare decisions and have come under scrutiny from medical experts, appear biased towards providing treatment for β€œwealthy, white patients, to the detriment of poorer, sicker, or more diverse populations.” Chiu demanded that US News disclose the payments it receives from the hospitals it endorses.Β

Hundreds of Geisinger Hospital Nurses and Technical Workers Vote to Unionize

More than 300 technical workers and Licensed Practical Nurses at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center have voted to join Service Employees International Union Healthcare Pennsylvania. The vote was 213 to 35 in favor of unionizing. The newly-organized healthcare professionals will join the more than 700 unionized registered nurses at the hospital. β€œWe are delighted by the election results because we know we are going to be stronger patient advocates when we are all standing together,” one Geisinger RN said.Β

Debriefing Single Incident TraumaΒ

Debriefing is a guided conversation aimed at shifting abnormal and traumatic events into a perspective needed for learning and healing. Through guided self-reflection, debriefing creates meaning surrounding a story to foster self-acceptance and reduce the effects of cumulative caretaking trauma.

Debriefing identifies medical errors, improves communication, reviews team performance, and provides emotional support following a critical event. The tri-fold purpose of debriefing is to link safety, quality, and staff wellness.

DTFL often is asked, how do I bring debriefing to my organization? Our answer is to start at the unit level.

Here are a few guidelines for planning:Β

  • Seek support from your unit educator.

  • Collecting data and completing a review of the literature regarding debriefing can improve safety, quality, and wellness.

  • Research what debriefing framework aligns with your unit.

  • Seek out those interested in learning and facilitating debriefings.

  • Determine what clinical events should offer debriefings.
