Tragedy Sparks Advocacy

In the aftermath of his wife Ann’s sudden and tragic death, police detective Tim Lillard embarked on a relentless quest for answers, diving into his wife’s charts and interviewing hospital staff. He found a widespread crisis of nurse understaffing — in which the hospital industry allegedly understaffs units to decrease costs and increase profits — and its dire consequences for patient care. Concluding that his wife would still be alive had the ICU been staffed with more nurses, Lillard has joined the fight advocating for mandatory nurse-to-patient ratios.

Struggling Clinics

Bethesda Pediatrics, a nonprofit clinic in East Texas heavily dependent on Medicaid, faces ongoing challenges due to appointment cancellations and financial distress among its patients. Recent incidents, including a toddler losing Medicaid coverage before a primary care appointment, underscore the clinic's struggle. As Medicaid rolls have shrunk, clinics like Bethesda are experiencing significant revenue losses, jeopardizing their ability to serve low-income communities. Despite efforts to adapt and seek alternative funding, the clinic remains in a precarious position.

Shingles Scare

Former San Francisco nurse Laarni experienced an unexpected turn during a family trip to Hawaiʻi in May 2021. Initially dismissing the blisters appearing on her face as minor, she soon realized they were more serious, prompting a visit to urgent care upon landing in Hawaiʻi. She was diagnosed with shingles and hospitalized due to concerns about potential eye complications. She’s now sharing her story to raise awareness about this misunderstood condition.
