Hey-O Nursing Beat Friends!

Have you ever heard of Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup? There’s a reason why you probably haven’t. This medicine was supposedly a β€œcure all” for ailments that affected babies in the early 1900s. Its contents? Alcohol and morphine. It’s no surprise this preparation was later called β€œthe baby killer.” It’s just another example of weird medical practices from history that leave us scratching our heads.

Rethinking Our Careers

Nurses nationwide have been rethinking their roles in the field, and news organizations have been increasingly improving their coverage of the nursing workforce crisis. The latest is KSDK in St. Louis, which surveyed 749 St. Louis nurses, 77% of whom considered leaving the profession in the past year, and produced an in-depth look at the challenges nurses face in St. Louis and across Missouri. Check out the data-rich result.

Bring Nurses to the Table

It doesn’t take rocket science to know that providing nurses with adequate support is key to nurse retention. But what does supporting nurses mean in 2023, with the pandemic winding down, burnout still high, and overall exhaustion a part of the new normal? The first step is involving nurses in answering that question. As this article notes, management and nurses can then define what β€œwellness” means for today’s working nurses and their wants and needs.

The Nurse Honor Guard

Does your town have a local National Nurses Honor Guard Coalition chapter? These groups, such as the one in Mohawk Valley, New York, attend the funeral or memorial service of nurses who have died and pay tribute with a short ceremony similar to a military tribute. Most chapters dress in traditional white uniforms with a cap and cape and recite the Nightingale Tribute before placing a white rose on the casket or near the urn.

Tips for Addressing Employment Gaps

Addressing work history gaps is crucial for nurses seeking job opportunities. To reassure potential employers, consider these cover letter tips:

  • In your cover letter, briefly explain the time spent caring for relatives and children or managing personal health issues without providing too many details.Β

Example: β€œI was fortunate to spend the last three years at home with my kids.”

  • Emphasize your readiness to jump back into the workforce in the cover letter.Β

Example: β€œI was fortunate to spend the last three years at home with my kids. However, I am excited to get back to work and look forward to contributing to the exceptional care in your department.”

By proactively addressing work history gaps and focusing on your commitment to nursing, you can strengthen your job applications and increase your chances of landing interviews.Β
