How Clinicians Can Help Create Better Healthcare AI

Hippocratic AI has launched the Healthcare AI Agent App Store, which allows licensed clinicians to quickly create AI agents to improve patient care and operational efficiency. Clinicians get a cut from the revenue their agents generate when used by Hippocratic’s customers. The platform leverages clinicians’ expertise to make AI solutions safer, more empathetic, and better suited to patient needs, while ensuring high safety standards through a three-phase validation process. This co-design approach emphasizes patient-centered, responsible healthcare innovation.

Grapefruit Contraindications’ Days Are Numbered

Unlike other citrus fruits like mandarins and oranges, grapefruits contain furanocoumarins, molecules that interfere with liver enzymes and cause some medications to build up to dangerous levels. By crossbreeding mandarins and grapefruits, researchers have identified genes linked to furanocoumarin production—and are now exploring gene editing to create safer grapefruit varieties. They believe ancient breeders unknowingly spread a valuable mutated gene that halts furanocoumarin production to an ancestor of modern mandarins and oranges, which could someday eliminate the need for grapefruit-related drug warnings.

FDA to Propose Nicotine Cap

The Biden administration is expected to propose a nicotine cap in cigarettes to curb addiction, a move public health experts call “game-changing.” The rule, which may take years to finalize, could reduce smoking-related deaths and prevent millions from becoming addicted. The FDA first discussed this plan in 2017, but it stalled. While the new proposal won’t cover e-cigarettes or nicotine replacements, studies suggest cutting nicotine by up to 95% could save millions of lives.

The 2024 NurseHack4Health Pitch-A-Thon featured over 80 nurse-led teams from around the world, pitching their best healthcare innovation solutions. From the top ten finalists, the Ghanaian-Diaspora Nursing Alliance and Seattle Children’s Hospital were selected as awardees, receiving a total of $185,500 in combined grant funding.

Ghanaian-Diaspora Nursing Alliance presented MAMA-CVD, aiming to reduce maternal mortality in Ghana by training midwives to detect cardiovascular risks using AI-powered ultrasound technology. 

Seattle Children’s Hospital's solution is geared toward predicting peripheral IV catheter infusion failures by using an AI-driven machine learning algorithm integrated into IV pump software.
