For our last installment of Spooky Diagnosis Monday, I’ve got one right out of the annals of lycanthropy, or rather, the medical books. Congenital hypertrichosis, or Werewolf Syndrome, causes a person to have abnormal and excessive hair growth all over their body and is present at birth. Interestingly enough, other forms of hypertrichosis are acquired and may occur after a person has taken certain medications like phenytoin, streptomycin, or even minoxidil, the main ingredient in Rogaine.

A program that started in 2004 to highlight nurses making a significant impact on the industry has now inducted its first Black woman — Shawntay Harris. The Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) is nationally honoring Harris for her dedication to the profession, which she started in 2000. In 2006, Harris opened an American Heart Association training center called Eminent CPR, and she has since also begun offering courses from the Emergency Nurses Association as well as her own.

Giving Honor Where It's Due

For 170 years, a town square in Savannah, Georgia, has honored US Vice President and vocal slavery advocate John C. Calhoun — but no longer. The square will now be named after Susie King Taylor, a woman born into slavery who became a Civil War nurse with the 33rd US Colored Troops Infantry Regiment. Taylor is the only African-American woman who published a memoir of her time during the war.

Remote nurse interview questions aren’t all that different from in-person interviews. But they will probably throw this curve ball your way. 

• Question: Why do you want to work remotely?

• Bad Answer: So I can avoid people and work in PJs.

• Better Answer: Working remotely would allow me to work with <company name>, which wouldn’t be an option for me otherwise due to my location.

• Better Answer: I share similar values with <company name> of maintaining a positive work-life balance and reducing my impact on the environment where I am able. Working here would allow me to do both.
