HUDDLE

Good Morning, Readers!

This week is a special one for me because itโ€™s the last week of my 20โ€™sโ€“โ€“both a slightly terrifying and exciting reality. Every birthday, I like to get reflective and make a list of the top things I am grateful for. At the top of my list this year is being a nurse:

  • Iโ€™m grateful to exist in a profession that has allowed me to be present for so many human experiences, good and bad.ย

  • Iโ€™m grateful to have worked in the NICU (my dream specialty) and watched little babies flourish!ย

  • Iโ€™m MOST grateful to be part of the TNB team and be present with all of you (and be in a profession that allows versatility!)

Now I want to hear from you!ย ย What aspect of being a nurse are you most grateful for? Connect with me here and let me know.

Have You Heard of Renal Denervation?

Renal denervation, a procedure the FDA approved just a few months ago, offers hope for patients with treatment-resistant hypertension by disrupting overactive kidney nerves. While renal denervation is not a cure, studies show it can drop blood pressure by an average of 8 to 10 points. The American Heart Association recently endorsed it as promising, but hospitals are still determining candidates and insurance coverage. Of course, experts stress that lifestyle changes and regular monitoring remain crucial for managing hypertension.

Providence Nurses' Healthcare in Jeopardy

Providence warned striking Oregon nurses that their healthcare benefits will lapse if the walkout continues past February 28, adding that nurses who return by the deadline will not face this consequence. Nearly 5,000 employees across eight Providence hospitals in Oregon began striking on January 10. And while some bargaining units have reached deals, many nurses remain without contracts. While Providence claims the policy was clear from the start, the Oregon Nurses Association condemned it as a pressure tactic that prioritizes profits over caregivers and patients.

Thousands of HHS Employees Fired

Federal health agencies including the CDC, FDA, and NIH, have been downsided tremendously as thousands of HHS probationary workersโ€”typically those with less than a year on the jobโ€”were terminated over the weekend. The CDC alone lost one-tenth of its workforce, and this includes half of the officers in the agencyโ€™s Epidemic Intelligence Service (the CDCโ€™s โ€œdisease detectivesโ€). Mistaken terminations and contractor layoffs added to the fallout, sparking backlash over the impact on public health. While the White House defended the cuts as necessary reforms, many affected workers expressed shock and financial distress.

The Transformative Power of Debriefing

Debriefing is an essential practice for nurses, providing a structured setting for reflection and recovering a sense of safety in the aftermath of trauma.ย

Debriefing is crucial for both professional development and personal well-being. Following high-pressure situations, debriefing enables nurses to engage in open discussions about the events addressing both successes and areas for improvement.

This reflective practice facilitates the identification of potential enhancements in patient care and fosters teamwork by promoting open communication among staff members.

Debriefing serves as a platform for expressing emotions, validating feelings, and offering support to colleagues. Regular debriefings, or well-being debriefings, can contribute to the development of a resilient nursing team, enhancing their preparedness for future challenges.

The emphasis on debriefing in nursing not only enhances patient care but also strengthens the nursing community by promoting mental health and professional growth.
