HANDOFF

GLP-1 Suicide Risk?

Concerns arose last year over whether GLP-1 agonists could increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or actions in people who took these medications for type 2 diabetes or obesity. But a recent FDA review suggests no evidence for those concerns so far, and a new study actually shows a reduced risk. The agency cannot completely rule out any possible risk, so it will continue to monitor reports and evidence on potential mental health side effects of the drugs.Β

People Make AI Work

There’s no question that AI presents tremendous opportunities for improving the efficiency of healthcare β€” but only if the actual clinicians taking care of patients are part of the brainstorming process for how that happens. Those are among the concerns that Paul Coyne, DNP, APRN, senior vice president and chief nurse executive of New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery, discussed in a thoughtful interview with Becker’s about the trends that worry him most in healthcare.

TECH TUESDAYΒ WITH NURSE MANNY

Getting a Fix on Falls

Falls remain a major threat to the health and independence of elderly adults. We, as nurses, know falls are a leading cause of injury for those greater than 65 and result in thousands of deaths and cost the healthcare system billions annually. Zoe Care showcased its new fall alerts system at CES 2024. The Zoe Fall device leverages existing WiFi signals to enable fall detection. It utilizes artificial intelligence to analyze subtle variations in the WiFi signals to recognize human movement and falls. If a potential fall is identified, it instantly alerts caregivers and family members via smartphone. Zoe Care has developed an innovative approach to fall monitoring by tapping into WiFi networks and AI. By removing the need to push a medical alert button after a debilitating fall manually, Zoe Care has the potential to improve outcomes significantly. It's an exciting development for in-home elderly care and independence.

FINANCIAL VITALSΒ WITH NURSEMONEYDATEβ„’

Health Accounts: FSA or HSA

Let's compare flexible spending accounts (FSA) and health savings accounts (HSA):

FSA: Spend Before Year-End

FSAs are employer-established and let you use pre-tax dollars for eligible health expenses. Remember that these funds typically expire at the end of the year, so use them wisely and in a timely manner.Β

HSA: Save, Invest, and Grow

If you have a high-deductible health plan, consider an HSA. Not only do your contributions roll over annually, but you also have the option to invest them, potentially growing your savings over time. It's like a health-focused savings account with investment perks.Β

Choose based on your lifestyle and financial health, just as you tailor care plans for your patients. FSA and HSA offer ways to manage healthcare spending wisely, empowering you personally and professionally. Learn about Nurse Sarah and her decision to go with an HSA.
