North Carolina Nurse Sentenced for Replacing Pain Meds with Saline
A North Carolina nurse has had her nursing license revoked and has been sentenced to four years in prison with three years of supervised release for tampering with painkillers reserved for surgery patients. Melissa Elizabeth Chacona worked as a nurse at a Raleigh-area surgical practice when, in 2019, she began stealing the medication from vials of fentanyl, morphine, and meperidine and replacing it with saline. She left less than 15% of the medication in the vials, which were also rendered unsterile.Β

Paralyzed Man Can Now Walk Again Using His Thoughts Thanks to Brain Implants
While living in China in 2011, a motorcycle accident left Gert-Jan Oskam paralyzed from the hips down. Now, brain implants, with assistance from an artificial intelligence thought decoder, have provided a bridge between his brain and spinal cord, bypassing the injured sections and allowing him to walk again β including up a steep ramp β with only just a walker. He had shown signs of neurological recovery more than a year after the implant was inserted, being able to walk with crutches even when the implant was switched off.Β

OSHA Fines Ohio Hospital Thousands After Finding It Failed to Protect Employees from Violence
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has found that Big Lots Behavioral Health Pavilion at Nationwide Childrenβs Hospital in Ohio failed to protect nurses,
mental health professionals, and other employees from violent patients. As a result, these patients have bitten, kicked, and punched employees, among other things, causing serious injuries, including concussions, lacerations, contusions, and sprains. As a result, OSHA has proposed fines of $18,000 in penalties for one serious violation and one
βother-than-seriousβ violation.Β

Itβs Okay to Take a Break
On the fifth Monday of May, we thought it would be a good reminder to tell you this - we all need breaks.
If youβre at a point in your remote nurse job search where you want to give
up, try taking a breather. Stop looking at job posts, editing your resume, and consuming our content (seriously). Go ahead and unplug for a mental vacation from the entire process. Then, after a week or two (maybe more), reassess whether you are ready to continue your search.Β
Applying for remote nursing jobs is unlike any bedside job hunt; it can be long and hard - even with all the right tools.Β
Ready to find your remote nursing role? Nurse Fern caters to remote job postings to nurses leaving the bedside. Check out our daily remote nurse job postings on Nurse Fern.

Cope AheadΒ
The Cope Ahead Plan (CAP) is a DBT distress tolerance skill enabling you to have a secure plan for when you begin to experience overwhelming anxiety.Β
DTFL works with nurses to identify:
Warning signs of anxiety.Β
Messages from your body that occur when anxiety arises.
Coping strategies.
Useful distractions.Β
People to connect with personally and professionally when alone is no longer enough.
In moments of anxiety and self-doubt, mental fog arises, leaving you paralyzed and unsure of how to self-soothe. CAP creates a plan when you feel relaxed and safe, preparing you to put it into action when you feel anxious and unsafe, be it alone or in social situations.Β
Creating your CAP and preparing for the inevitable moments of the human experience allows you to move through anxiety, anger, doubt, and sadness more easily as you care for your nervous system.
To learn additional distress tolerance skills and emotional freedom techniques that work best for you and to create your personalized CAP, book a session with Debriefing the Front Lines.
