Vermont Strike Averted

Nurses have reached a tentative agreement with the University of Vermont Medical Center, averting a planned 5-day strike. The Vermont Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals representing 1,900 nurses, initially planned the strike to protest labor practices and a lack of financial transparency. The agreement includes a 23% wage increase over the next 3 years, along with an additional step added each year of the contract, marking the largest wage increase in the union’s 21-year history.

Texas Independent Practice Battle

Nurse practitioners in Texas are pushing for legislation that would allow them to practice independently (like NPs in 27 other states), a move they say would expand primary care access, provide more personalized care, and alleviate their financial burdens associated with paying supervising physicians. But they face strong opposition from some physicians, including the Texas Medical Association’s president, who says physicians are β€œtrained at a higher level” and points to a 2023 TMA survey which found the majority of respondents opposed expanding NP’s scope of practice (though the question posed did not specifically mention NPs).Β

Free Medical School

Beginning in Fall 2024, education at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine will be free for most students thanks to a $1 billion Bloomberg Philanthropies donation. The initiative allows students from families earning under $300,000 to attend tuition-free and those from families earning up to $175,000 to also have living expenses covered. The donation also increases financial aid for graduate students at its schools of nursing and public health, as well as its other non-medical graduate schools. This isn’t the first healthcare-related initiative from Bloomberg Philanthropies this year.
