HUDDLE

Good Morning, Readers!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday, whether you were working, with your family & friends, or flying solo. I have to send a special shoutout to those who worked since I spent the long weekend in the hospital with a family member. It was tough to spend the holiday in the hospital as a visitor and not working, but I was extremely thankful for those who worked and showed both my family member, and my family some love.Β

I did bring a little holiday magic to the hospital though...how, might you ask? All it takes is a 🎄mobile tree, a car outlet 🔌, some blue tape, and some help from a little elf (a 5-year-old nephew) to hang some stockings 🧦...Check it out 👇

✨ Wishing you a peaceful last week of 2023!

Aussies in Agencies

The US isn’t the only country where nurses must choose between a permanent hospital position and temporary agency work. In Australia, nurses have been ditching their regular hospital gigs for short-term agency contracts for better pay β€” two to three times more per hour! β€” and flexibility. This trend appears to be growing, mainly thanks to health services expanding into remote areas. Health officials worry that the increasingly costly workforce will become unsustainable and unaffordable.

Litigation Over Training Program

Nursing assistant training schools in Minnesota are taking the state to court over its free nurse training program. The schools claim the program, designed to address healthcare labor shortages, violates federal law by being anti-competitive and excluding smaller institutions. They’re calling for a halt on the program to help their own declining enrollment, but the state thinks this program is a vital investment in healthcare. This comes at a time when Minnesota nursing assistant jobs exceeded a 17% vacancy rate in 2022.

A Facility on the Naughty List

The Northview Village nursing home in St. Louis, which has a one-star Medicare rating, abruptly closed days before Christmas due to lack of payroll funding. Some 170 residents were relocated without notice, some even without their families’ knowledge, while employees learned they wouldn’t be getting paid just a few hours before the closure. The Missouri Department of Health is investigating, and efforts are underway to assist affected workers and residents. Lawmakers recently proposed the Home and Community-Based Services Act, expanding nursing home access.

Ditch the Resolutions: Three Actionable Tips for Consistent Habits in the New Year

Let’s face itβ€”New Year’s resolutions often set us up for overwhelm rather than success. How often have you told yourself you’d start doing XYZ, only to fall off the wagon a few weeks later? There is a better way!

💜 Micro-Habits for Macro Impact: Commit to small changes, like a five-minute mindfulness session or a short walk. Celebrate wins and build consistencyβ€” tiny shifts = big changes in your mental clarity & well-being.

💜 Connect with Others: Share challenges/wins and create an accountability group for mutual support for a far more enjoyable & effective approach!

💜 Regular Self-Reflection: Identifies stressors & patterns so you can make intentional adjustments, set realistic expectations, and create space for yourself without the pressure of traditional resolutions.

This New Year, embrace small actionable steps and make intentional choices for a happier, healthier you!
