Nurses Protest L&D Closure

A decline in births is the reason cited by Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor, Maine, for plans to close their labor and delivery unit in July. But Maine nurses say they weren’t consulted on the “shortsighted” decision that would make the 10th Maine L&D closure in the past decade. More than 100 nurses from across Maine protested the closure alongside community members last week, but the hospital remains firm on its decision.

Tariffs Impact Healthcare

Uncertainty continues over what tariffs the federal administration will enact on which products, despite recent trade meetings, and Americans are reeling as the effects begin hitting home. A recent post by The Nursing Beat advisor Taofiki Gafar-Schaner, MSN, RN, explained how tariffs are already affecting healthcare, including preventing or delaying kids from receiving life-saving heart transplants. Here’s more on what tariffs actually are and how they’ll affect healthcare costs and equipment.

WHO Releases Major Nursing Report

On International Nurses Day yesterday, the World Health Organization launched its State of the World's Nursing report 2025. The report updates and builds on the 2020 edition, which gathered information from 191 countries on a global workforce of 27.9 million nurses. The new report “provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the nursing workforce,” including 12 priorities from the “Global strategic directions for nursing and midwifery 2021–2025” plus five additional priorities. Read all the details here.

TECH TUESDAY WITH NURSE MANNY

Tech Power = Responsibility

In today’s digital healthcare landscape, tools like EHRs, wearable devices, and mobile health apps have transformed how we deliver care. But with this progress comes real responsibility, especially around data privacy.

Some new initiatives propose consolidating massive datasets—from pharmacy claims to genomics and wearable data—into centralized databases. While the intent is to improve research into complex conditions like autism, it also raises red flags for digital security and patient consent.

As nurses, we’re trusted stewards of patient information. And at the risk of sounding like a HealthStream module, staying sharp on digital best practices matters. That includes using secure platforms, protecting access, and teaching patients how to keep their data safe.

By centering privacy in tech-forward care and advocating for our patients, we help preserve the trust that defines our profession.
