HUDDLE

Hey-O Nursing Beat Friends!

Since October is the spookiest month of the year, I’m going to bring you some of the weirdest medical diagnoses on Mondays that you’ve probably never heard of. This first one is quite the mouthful to say and very strange in appearance. Epidermodysplasia Verruciformis, also known as “Tree Man Disease,” causes a person to grow non-contagious warts all over their bodies that resemble tree bark. The warts can be removed but usually come back. Unfortunately, the disease does run in families, and currently, there is no cure.

A Life Saving Catch

A Notre Dame football fan named Mike Brown lives to see another football game thanks to the life-saving care he received when he lost consciousness at a game. At a football game, Indiana nurse Lauren Huyvaert saw an unconscious man who didn’t look well. The man’s daughter said he was tired from having dental work, but minutes later, Huyvaert overheard someone say they couldn’t wake Brown. Huyvaert’s quick response and CPR ultimately saved Brown’s life.

This Really Isn’t Fair

While the country has made great strides over the last century in closing the employment inequities between the sexes, a new Deloitte analysis shows we still have a long way to go regarding healthcare costs. The annual out-of-pocket healthcare costs for women are, on average, about $266 more than men’s (an 18% increase), not including pregnancy-related expenses. That amounts to some $15 billion more in out-of-pocket costs for American women. The inequity is particularly egregious when you consider women are still being paid less than men.

The Descent on Ascension

Nurses at Saint Agnes Hospital in Baltimore have descended on Ascension management for allegedly refusing to respect their right to organize. The National Nurses Organizing Committee, a National Nurses United affiliate representing about 500 RNs at the hospital, filed complaints with the National Labor Relations Board for Ascension’s unfair labor practices. This includes threatening to withdraw benefits from employees because of unionization efforts, unlawfully making promises and/or granting benefits to shut down unionization, and surveilling employees.

THAT REMOTE LIFE WITH NURSE FERN

Six-Figure Remote Nursing Jobs: Do They Exist?

Even though 100k isn’t what it used to be, it still surpasses the median US household income. You’ve likely heard of nurses in California or travel nurses earning these wages. But have you considered achieving a six-figure nursing income from the comfort of your own home?

While the job market is competitive, a great opportunity might come your way with the right approach.

Tips to get started:

  • Think outside the box with your job search. Consider companies beyond insurance or healthcare.

  • Start a side hustle. A business venture could push your income just enough to reach six figures.

  • Develop a high-value skill. Technology, informatics, sales, and marketing skills are all in demand.

  • Master the art of negotiation. You may be able to squeeze a little more out of your potential employer with the perfect counteroffer.
