Healthcare starts with you. This is your beat.

Hey-O Nursing Beat Friends!

It’s time for Thursday’s weird medical practice from history! Today’s practice is especially strange. We’ve all had to give a patient an enema once or twice in our careers. But what would you say if you had to give a patient a tobacco smoke enema? It really was a practice in the 1700s! The thought behind it was that the smoke would warm a cold patient up from within and improve respiration. Later, it was rumored to cure anything from a headache to cholera. (I would bet money that this is where that adage of blowing smoke up someone’s….well, you know what came from!)

Big love and even better health,

MORNING BRIEF 🍳 ☕️

Abducted Nurse Found Dead in Detroit

Patrice Wilson, a 29-year-old nurse who worked at Detroit Medical Center, was kidnapped on May 13th as she left work when a man entered her car and forced her to leave with him. Wilson’s body was found with a gunshot wound in an SUV outside an apartment complex Sunday morning. The suspect, 36-year-old Jamere Miller, was Wilson’s ex-boyfriend and “a bit obsessive,” according to Wilson’s mother. Miller remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous.

Detroit Medical Center issued the following statement: “It is with deep sadness that we offer heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and DMC colleagues of cherished nurse leader Patrice Wilson, as well as Patrice’s mother, another dedicated DMC team member. Patrice was not just a co-worker but a loving friend to many at the DMC. Grief counseling is available for all staff at our Adult Central Campus hospitals.”

In-Depth Article Explores Green Card Freeze Impact on Nursing

We told you previously about the US decision to pause nurse green card applications, only processing those submitted through June 2022. The American Hospital Association already warned in December that changing green card rules would harm the ability to recruit foreign nurses to combat nursing shortages. A feature at Politico explores the issue in depth, revealing how the “shrinking labor pool has ripple effects beyond the hospital walls.”

Hospitals will continue to suffer shortages, and nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospice care will also see reductions in the available workforce, thereby increasing costs and delaying care. The article notes that foreign nurses already play an important role in filling staffing shortages—and the nursing shortage will likely exceed 200,000 in the next few years. The best a State Department spokesperson has in response to Politico’s question is that they “are continually monitoring the situation.”

Nurse Well-being and Compassion Fatigue Part of UC Irvine Curriculum

Burnout has been a significant problem in nursing for years, long before the pandemic. Nursing schools are now starting to find ways to work coping strategies and awareness into their curricula. At the University of California at Irvine, students learn about compassion fatigue and the importance of looking after their well-being, according to Leanne Burke, Ed.D., MSN, an associate clinical professor and director of pre-licensure programs at the University’s Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing

For example, two of the school’s courses include “Compassion, Caring, and Communication with Vulnerable Populations,” while another focuses on leadership skills, in which students “develop modules for practicing nurses to mitigate compassion fatigue,” Becker’s reports. Burke told Becker’s that she’s trying to be part of the movement away from the adage that says “nurses eat their young,” as it was when she was starting out.

DAILY DIVERSION 💊

The pandemic was a rough time for everyone, but those in nursing homes could become particularly lonely. That’s why Rachel Bennett, of Bordentown, New Jersey, started the Nursing Home Card Project in April 2020. She and nine-year-old Sedona Orlow, Bennet’s boyfriend’s daughter, wanted to ensure older adults knew someone was thinking of them. Read more about this remarkable project here.
