“Treading the Estrogen Pool: My Life as a Male Nurse”, is my memoir I've dreamt to be sold on Amazon and your local bookstore in the future. All satire aside, that’s how I would describe my experience in nursing, a domain where men are, interestingly, the minority. It’s quite a unique perspective, and I genuinely believe it's more an opportunity than a challenge. We bring something distinctive to nursing, complementing the rich legacy built by our talented female peers. And while we contribute in our unique way, there’s a wealth of knowledge we derive from these accomplished women. Congratulations to Rick Lucas, RN, a Stat Nurse at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, who was pinned as the new president of the Ohio Nurses Association during the ONA Convention October 3-6. Lucas told the ONA in 2017 that his favorite part of his job is using the Modified Early Warning System (MEWs) to do proactive rounds to identify patients at risk of sepsis or other life-threatening changes in status, making a real difference in patients’ lives.

Men “Rush” to Nursing
|
When only about 9.4% of US nurses are men, Chicago’s Rush University College of Nursing has long been dedicated to bringing more men into the field with its Rush Men in Nursing program. The program aims to support and retain men in the field, which is more important than ever with the looming nursing shortage. Program faculty advisor Aaron Franklin, DNP, RN, says he always wanted to be a nurse and began volunteering in hospitals at age 15.

Keep Reaching Out

Other colleges are recognizing the opportunity to recruit more male nurses, too. Vanderbilt University hosted a panel discussion with three male nurses in July, including former American Nurses Association president Ernest Grant, MSN, RN, and Blake Smith, MSN, RN, former president of the American Association for Men in Nursing. The University of Pittsburgh recently founded a Men in Nursing
Club as a safe place for networking, mentoring, socializing, and recruitment. Check out the video on Pitt’s club!
