HUDDLE

Hey-O Nursing Beat Friends!

Time for another round of Mystery Diagnosis Monday! We’ll play like a game. I’ll give you three clues and you try to guess what the diagnosis is!

☃️ Patients with this diagnosis present with this most often in the winter and/or cold temps.

☃️ Symptoms can include hives, swelling of the lips, and swelling of the hands.

☃️ The most severe form of this diagnosis can cause a patient to go into anaphylaxis.

(Side note: My husband suffered from this diagnosis pretty severely as a child.)

What’s a Mom To Do?

Last month, we told you about Alabama’s alarming — and worsening — maternity care deserts. While Massachusetts’ maternity services aren’t so dry, the Massachusetts Nurses Association is calling for the state to halt any further shutdowns of services after UMass Memorial Health’s Leominster Hospital closed its birthing center. This closure is the 11th shuttering of a material health unit in Massachusetts in the last decade. The nurses urge the state to assess all maternal child health services issues before any more closures occur.

A Virtual 1:1?

If you feel like you’re on the train to burnout-ville, you may want to see if you can care for some of your patients virtually. A new study found that monitoring patients remotely can help improve “emotional labor and emotional exhaustion” compared with in-person sitting. The research finds virtual sitting a “resource gain” and builds on previous studies showing how the technology improves safety and reduces hospital costs.

We Have Questions Here

Some 1500 nurses and other clinicians have signed a petition against the bankruptcy status and privatization of Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital. Hazel Hawkins filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy in August, a few months before it became one of California’s 17 struggling hospitals to receive a state-backed loan. Then, last month, health officials announced a plan to raise funds and take over Hazel Hawkins’s operations. However, a consulting agency found that the hospital doesn’t need to be bankrupt or sold off.

Spinal Tap Failures No More

With approximately 350,000 infant spinal taps are needed annually, and a 38% unsuccessful tap rate, SMöLTAP is a game-changer in infant healthcare.

SMöLTAP, created by doctors at Brown University & Hasbro Children's, is a device designed to revolutionize infant lumbar punctures that positions febrile infants in an upright and stable position, while simultaneously negating the need for an experienced "holder" (or two).

SMöLTAP reduces costs, enhances patient care, boosts tap success rates, while minimizes unnecessary hospital admissions. The current lumbar puncture procedure which involves awkward positioning, causes distress to babies and high failure rates.  SMöLTAP aims to reduce these failures to zero percent, ultimately preventing deaths from Meningitis. Its benefits include reduced variability, increased consistency, and repeatability, while aligning the spine with shoulders and hips.

Should You Send a Thank You Note After an Interview?

Taking the extra moment to send gratitude to your interviewers can set you apart from your competition. Here are some tips to ensure your thank you note has the most impact.

Include these three key elements:

  1. Thank the interviewer.

  2. Reiterate your interest in the role.

  3. Reference something that was discussed and that you found interesting/impactful.

Tips to ensure your message of gratitude makes it to the proper recipients.

  1. Ask the recruiter if they can share the interviewers’ email information. If not, they may be willing to forward a message to you.

  2. Find your interviewer on LinkedIn and send a connection request with the thank you message as the connection note.

  3. Use Google to research the company and what naming convention they utilize. (i.e. firstname.lastname@company.com)
