HANDOFF

Applications Denied

According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, nearly 66,000 qualified applications to nursing programs were turned down at four-year colleges and universities. Most were for entry-level BSN programs, but more than 5,000 were for master’s programs. Some applicants may have been accepted elsewhere. However, the findings still suggest thousands of students were turned away because of “insufficient clinical placement sites, faculty, preceptors and classroom space, as well as budget cuts.”

New “Airborne” Definition

The World Health Organization, a key player in the COVID-19 pandemic, was at the center of the ‘airborne’ definition debate. Despite numerous experts claiming COVID-19 was airborne, the WHO maintained a stricter definition. However, after two years of deliberation, the WHO has now issued a revised definition, expanding its application to various pathogens and effectively settling the controversy.

Tackling Shingles

According to the CDC, about one in three people will develop shingles at some point in their lives, but people age 50 and older can substantially reduce their risk with a shingles vaccination. Now, new long-term data from vaccine manufacturer GSK reveals just how effective and long-lasting protection from their vaccine is. The data shows that even 11 years after vaccination, the vaccine is still about 82% effective in adults 50 and older and 73% effective in those 70 and older.

TECH TUESDAY WITH NURSE MANNY

Line of Sight

Visual prostheses, such as the intracortical visual prosthesis, being researched at the Illinois Institute of Technology, are paving the way for a brighter future. These devices implant chips into the visual cortex, converting images into neural signals and allowing users to perceive basic visual cues. While still in the early stages—offering a glimpse rather than a complete view—these chips are gateways to potential independence for the visually impaired. Keeping an "eye" on such innovations could radically transform patient care.
