HUDDLE

Happy FriYAY Readers,

Are you a manager with a tough problem to solve? Or are you a nurse needing advice on approaching your manager? We have a newly launched Manager’s Memo column where an anonymous nurse manager will give you tools and resources to help you solve all of your pressing issues. The Nursing Beat aims to bridge this gap between staff and administration because until we all play on the same team 🏉, we can’t truly solve the systemic issues faced in healthcare. Email us your questions at ManagersMemo@TheNursingBeat.com.Β

CSI, But Make it Nursing

Since launching in 2012, the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses’ Clinical Scene Investigator Academy has trained hundreds of nurses nationwide at more than 100 hospitals to effect positive changes at their facilities. At Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, ICU nurses standardized handoff routines that reduced medication errors to zero, while UCI Health nurses eliminated superficial surgical site infections through educational materials. Meanwhile, LA General Medical Center nurses reduced nurse turnover from 27% to 19%. AACN has more astounding results from the program in Southern California.Β

Deep, Dank, Sleep

Some people swear by marijuana edibles for better sleep, with a small study finding that more than three-quarters of surveyed users believe it helps. But the scientific evidence isn’t so clear-cut. Some research suggests marijuana helps people fall asleep faster but reduces sleep quality. In contrast, others found patients with mental health issues may get better sleep from marijuana (especially for people with anxiety who took edibles). See Time for a rundown on this surprisingly complicated issue.Β

Break the Chain of Violence

Nurses at Seattle Children’s Hospital are sounding the alarm with management about workplace violence. Within the past two weeks, they’ve had to call the police twice to respond to incidents of violence at the facility’s psychiatry and behavioral medicine unit. In one situation, a teenager destroyed property and attacked staff with a metal pole. Nurses are asking for more safety officers to be available 24/7, more nurses (break, resource, and safety coach nurses), and better pay to encourage nurses to stick around despite escalating violence.Β

Must See Money Movies this Season

I’m not a Grinch, but there are only so many times I can watch Home Alone, Elf, and The Santa Clause! Make no mistake, I love this time of year. I just like watching new things from time to time that have the opportunity to change my perspective or give me new insights.

As we approach the new year, thinking about our goals and hopefully having a little more downtime to relax, add these movies to your watchlist this season for a little money inspiration!

  • Something Ventured: Highlights the Bay Area and how venture capitalists were crucial in shaping our technology-driven culture.

  • Money, Explained: A Docu-series on Netflix, short and engaging episodes that break down all things personal finance.

  • The Big Short: An absolute must-see on how the 2008 financial crisis unfolded and the lives it impacted because of it.

Reach out any time this holiday season to talk about financial wellness and money moves!Β
