Anxiety Over Data

Are you struggling with anxiety or depression? There are plenty of apps for that, but the price is often your privacy. For example, a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission about the company BetterHelp led to a settlement last March requiring the company to return $7.8 million to customers. But they’re not the only offenders. More than two dozen top-ranking mental health apps sell users’ data, according to Mozilla’s *privacy not included site.

Stop Acting Like That

According to a study by the American Organization for Nursing Leadership Foundation, more than two-thirds of nurse leaders reported observing bullying at work in the past year. While patient families were the biggest offenders, cited by 58% of survey respondents, staff nurses were a close second (57%) for bullying others at work. See who the other bullies were, according to 2,476 nurse leaders surveyed in November 2023 here.

A Win for Virtual Nursing

The expansion of virtual nursing can help not only patients but nurses themselves as well, suggest nurses from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). An article in AACN Advanced Critical Care argues that the “Rise of the Virtual Nurse” can help mentor new nurses, improve patient and nurse satisfaction, proactively manage patients awaiting hospital admission, reduce the risk of ICU transfers, assist in recruiting and retaining nurses, and more.

TECH TUESDAY WITH NURSE MANNY

Precision Dosing Patches

New technology could change how we help patients manage chronic conditions. Researchers at the University of North Carolina have developed a wireless "smart patch" that sticks to a patient's skin and can release medication on demand when triggered by a smartphone or computer signal.

This could be truly transformative for conditions or diseases that require precise drug dosing. The patch's tiny microneedles can deliver highly targeted treatment to areas less than one square millimeter. It can also initiate drug release within 30 seconds in emergencies. Patients may be able to wear multiple patches at once for different drugs, minimizing hospital visits.

As nurses, we know the importance of medication adherence and managing side effects. This patch could bring new convenience and personalization. As the developers continue testing and refining it, we look forward to seeing how it might be implemented to improve patient care. Our role will be crucial in evaluating its real-world effectiveness and integration into treatment plans. This is an encouraging advancement in applying technology to medicine.
