Plants Allergy Sufferers Should Avoid |
“April showers bring May flowers” is a cute rhyme with an ugly reminder: allergy season is here. Wind-pollinated trees, grasses, and weeds like oak, ragweed, and Kentucky grass release lightweight pollen that triggers sneezing and itching. Allergy-friendly options include female trees, sterile grasses, and flowers like begonias, tulips, and dense-petaled roses, which release less pollen and are easier on the sinuses. Click here to track pollen levels in your area and here for a nifty calendar showing when individual allergenic plant and mold species are most productive. |

State of Nursing Workforce |
The nursing workforce has stabilized and is projected to grow, yet significant challenges persist. Stress, burnout, staff shortages, and high turnover remain major concerns, with 40% of RNs planning to leave within 5 years. Nurse practitioner roles are expected to grow the most by far by 2033, but workforce aging and inadequate mental health support continue to strain the system. While recruitment and retention efforts are helping, sustainable change will require better support, flexible schedules, and greater involvement of nurses in shaping their roles and future. |

Men Die Most From Broken Hearts |
Research shows that more women experience broken heart syndrome—takotsubo cardiomyopathy, a heart condition triggered by physical or emotional stress, often following events like divorce or loss—but men die from it at over twice the rate. A possible reason for this is that it takes a “more dangerous trigger” to bring on the syndrome in men, who also tend to have less social support to deal with stress. Some experts believe some people may have an underlying susceptibility to broken heart syndrome, which is hard to both treat and prevent. |

State of the Nursing Workforce |
Every two years, an in-depth report reviews the results of a national survey of the nursing workforce. The 2024 National Nursing Workforce Survey includes data collected on the national supply of registered nurses, advanced practice registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses/licensed vocational nurses.
A few of the positive highlights of the report results compared to 2022 data:
👍 73% of respondents have a baccalaureate degree or higher
👍 10%-16% increase in median pre-tax incomes ($88,000 in 2024 from $80,000 in 2022)
👍 Growing racial diversity in the nursing workforce with increased numbers of both Black and Latinx nurses
Some less reassuring trends:
👎 40%, or up to 1.6 million nurses, indicate wanting to leave the workforce by 2029
👎 The top 5 reasons for wanting to leave reported were: stress/burnout, workload, understaffing, inadequate salary, and workplace violence
These results may mean some challenges are on the horizon, but they also offer some good news for nursing’s future:
🥳 Job security
🥳 Increasing salaries
🥳 More diverse workforces
