Exercise Reduces Risk of Cancer Returning

Just how important is exercise for cancer survivors? If they survived colorectal cancer, sticking to a structured exercise program for at least three years may reduce the risk of cancer returning by about 28%, found a new study in NEJM. Exercise also reduced risk of death by 37%—every 14 people who exercised prevented one of them from dying. But the study has some significant limitations. More trials can reveal whether researchers get the same results.

Wisconsin Nurses Win ‘Historic’ Contract

It took five days of striking and months of bargaining, but nurses at UnityPoint Health - Meriter in Wisconsin have finally come to an acceptable agreement with the hospital. Among the wins are an 8% wage increase over two years and better protocols and responses when it comes to adequate staffing and staff safety. Though they didn’t get the staffing ratios they wanted, emergency department and child & adolescent psychiatry staff received specific commitments related to safety.

FDA Silence Undermining Food Safety

Nearly 90 people across 15 states got sick from E. coli in tainted lettuce last fall, but most Americans still haven’t heard about this outbreak. That’s because the FDA—who identified the lettuce ranch and processor responsible for the outbreak in February—never issued a public announcement about the investigation as they usually do. It’s one of multiple changes from the Trump administration (like dropping a regulation to reduce salmonella in poultry) that risks worsening food safety.

Supporting LGBTQ+ Care

2025 has seen an increase in attacks on LGBTQ+ care across the United States. For Pride Month, here are 3 ways you can support LGBTQ+ patients at work:

  1. Ask about pronouns and share your own. Sharing and asking about pronouns fosters an inclusive care environment + validates gender identity

  2. Don’t assume. Things like sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, and family relationships should not be assumed. Enter patient encounters with curiosity and an open mind.

  3. Educate yourself and others. Don’t wait for mandatory training to learn more about LGBTQ+ patient care.

Here are some resources to support exceptional LGBTQ+ care:
