West Nile Virus Hits Early |
Nine human cases of West Nile virus—five of which involved severe neuroinvasive disease—have been confirmed across at least 8 states this year, earlier than usual. Rising global temperatures have expanded mosquito habitats and breeding cycles, contributing to the spread of West Nile and other mosquito-borne diseases. To reduce your risk of exposure, experts recommend removing stagnant water sources on your property, installing screens on doors and windows, using insect repellent, and wearing long-sleeve clothing.

Future Nurse Academy Expands |
The University Hospitals in Cleveland have launched an impactful program called the Future Nurse Academy, aimed at high school students to spark interest in nursing careers. Starting with 26 students last summer, the program expanded to 78 participants this year due to high demand, with over 1,000 applications received. The curriculum involves three 10-day sessions at local nursing
schools, providing hands-on training and hospital field trips to various specialized units. One-third of last year’s participants are now enrolled in collegiate nursing programs.

Weight Loss Drugs Reduce Cancer Risk
|
New evidence suggests GLP-1 weight loss and diabetes drugs may lower the risk of developing some obesity-related cancers. Compared with Type 2 diabetes patients on insulin alone, those on GLP-1 drugs were nearly 50% less likely to develop colon cancer and had a lower risk of developing other tumors of the digestive system. However, the drugs showed no impact on post-menopausal breast cancer and thyroid cancer rates, and GLP-1 patients actually had a higher risk of kidney cancer compared to patients on metformin.

What Is the NurseHack4Health Pitch-A-Thon? |
Nurses consistently drive innovation by optimizing workflows and devising practical solutions to complex challenges. The 2024 NurseHack4Health Pitch-A-Thon invites nurse-led teams to deconstruct healthcare problems, devise solutions, and rebuild systems for a better future.
Apply by August 2 for a chance to bring your innovation to life. Nurse-led interdisciplinary teams from 501c3 non-profits (or those with fiscal partners) can apply. Participants will receive coaching support throughout the process including access to workshops and coaching to develop budgets.
Finalists can be awarded up to $150,000 in grant funding. Applications are due August 2nd—Apply now!

The time has come to move beyond a focus on the well-being of individuals and towards a more holistic view wherein well-being is seen as a function of systems. Well-becoming acknowledges the influence of the following factors while also considering an individual's life stage:
Global & National Factors - War, terrorism, pandemics, natural disasters, environment, climate change, technology
Local Factors - Health literacy, justice, access to housing, transportation, education, employment, accessibility to nature
Personal Factors - Home and work environment, education, employment, purpose and contribution, mental/physical/spiritual health, food, water, energy security, financial stability.
Well-becoming can be thought of as a culmination of our life journeys toward meaning and purposefulness that focuses on growth, progress, and self-discovery while also allowing for mistakes.
Recognizing that it is not just about getting to an end destination of “being well” enables us to move through the human experience with a deeper meaning and purpose.
