Good Morning, Readers!

On this day in 1722, Josef Leopold Auenbrugger was born. An Austrian physician, he is credited for devising the diagnostic technique of percussionβ€”remember that from nursing school?

He investigated the technique for seven years before publishing it in his book, Inventum Novum, but it did not gain wide-spread recognition until after his death.

Nurses Win Better Contract

A newly ratified labor contract gives wage increases and a commitment to address nursing concerns to nurses and licensed professionals at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, California. RNs and licensed medical professionals will get at least a 22% wage increase, and new nurses can earn up to 43% wage increases as they gain experience. See the video highlights of the bargaining session where professionals confronted management about staffing, workload, and patient safety concerns.

GLP-1s May Reduce Alcohol Cravings

After discovering how GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic/Wegovy and Mounjaro/Zepbound β€œturn off” food cravings in the brain, scientists have been eager to see if they have an impact on other addiction cravings. A recent study suggests the answer could be β€œyes” for alcohol. The study of over 227,000 Swedes with alcohol use disorder found a lower risk of hospitalization from alcohol-related events. Since it was an observational study, randomized controlled trials are necessary to confirm the findings.

Global Measles Rates Continue Climbing

Missed and delayed vaccinations during the pandemic have continued to result in growing measles cases across the world. A new WHO and CDC report showed a 20% increase in measles cases this year compared to 2023. Over 22 million children who should have been vaccinated did not get even one dose of the vaccine last year. Some experts worry about the rate of U.S. measles outbreaks rising further if Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is confirmed as HHS Secretary, citing his alleged contribution to Samoa’s outbreak in 2019.

It’s time for another Mystery Diagnosis Minute! Continuing on with our focus on diabetes for National Diabetes Awareness Month, today’s diagnosis is one that our diabetic patients should watch out for after an illness.Β

🤔 This complication usually comes on very quickly (within 24 hours) and can progress in severity rapidly.

🤔 The elevated amount of this diagnosis-related substance in the patient’s blood causes their blood to become acidic which ultimately leads to dehydration.

🤔 More severe symptoms can include breath that smells fruity, Kussmaul respirations, and disorientation.Β
